Practical facilitation, learning design and strategic support for complex multi-actor settings
I support organisations, partnerships and teams working in complex sustainability, research and systems change contexts. My work focuses on collaborative process design, structured reflection, strategic input and clear communication.
I continue to contribute through Learning for Sustainability, collaborative writing, research support, peer review, resource curation and short advisory or reflective support. I am open to small, focused pieces of work where my experience can add value, particularly where teams, partnerships or governance groups need structured thinking and learning support rather than long-term delivery.
With over 30 years of experience in sustainable development and natural resource management, my work spans climate adaptation, biodiversity and ecosystems, freshwater and catchment management, and related nexus themes. I’m based in Aotearoa New Zealand and work both locally and internationally.
My practice often sits at the interface between programme management and governance. I help teams clarify purpose, surface assumptions, and design how learning informs decision-making over time. This may involve strengthening monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) frameworks, facilitating shared strategy conversations, or supporting reflective consolidation at key transition points.
Across contexts, I work with MEL not simply as a reporting requirement, but as part of a wider approach to learning, decision-making and adaptive practice. The aim is to support timely, defensible decisions, whether at team, partnership or governance level.
I am most useful in short, focused roles where a team needs help to clarify direction, review its thinking, strengthen a strategy, shape a learning process, or communicate complex work clearly. This often includes early-stage, under-resourced or cross-cultural settings, where careful framing and shared learning can make a significant difference.
Core services
These core areas are offered flexibly, usually through short advisory input or coaching through to facilitation, evaluation, co-design, strategic thinking, or writing support.
- Multi-actor process co-design and facilitation – Supporting teams and partnerships to work constructively across mandates, knowledge systems, and interests. This includes co-design processes, shared decision-making forums, collaborative planning, and structured sense-making conversations.
- Monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) – Designing adaptive, complexity-aware MEL approaches that integrate Theory of Change, rubrics, performance stories, and participatory reflection. These approaches help teams and governance groups interpret evidence, strengthen judgement, and adapt responsibly.
- Strategic planning and direction-setting – Facilitating shared framing, scenario exploration, and structured dialogue to guide visioning and strategic development. I help groups explore context, clarify drivers and constraints, and develop strategies that remain grounded while adaptable.
- Writing, synthesis, and knowledge communication – Crafting blogs, articles, evaluation reports, synthesis papers, and resource hubs that translate complex work into clear, accessible insight. This includes supporting teams to consolidate learning and communicate thoughtfully with diverse audiences.
Specialist support
These specialist offerings complement my core services and can also be provided as standalone support where a short, focused contribution is useful..
- Reflective coaching and mentoring – Supporting individuals and teams to deepen practice and build confidence in adaptive management, participatory research, and systems thinking.
- Governance and strategic reflection support – Working with governance groups or cross-agency partnerships to structure learning conversations, revisit purpose, interpret evaluative insight, and strengthen collective responsibility in uncertain settings.
- Ethics and research integrity – Supporting applied ethics reflection and embedding ethical practice within programme design and collaborative research.
- AI, search strategies, and digital knowledge tools – Coaching individuals and teams to use AI and internet tools thoughtfully to support research, networking, writing, SEO, knowledge mobilisation, and strategic scanning.
How I work
My approach is grounded in participatory practice and structured reflection. I work alongside project teams, partnerships and governance groups to help clarify what matters, make reasoning visible, and connect learning with decision-making.
Much of my work involves early-stage or transitional moments, where initiatives are forming, resetting direction, or consolidating learning. These may be place-based collaborations, cross-sector partnerships, or programmes working at the intersection of ecological, social, and policy systems. In these contexts, I bring systems thinking, MEL design, and facilitation to help strengthen both practice and oversight.
I work independently under the name Will Allen & Associates. While I am no longer seeking to maintain a full consultancy pipeline, I remain closely connected to a network of experienced peers and collaborators and am happy to make introductions where helpful.
